Thank You Umizoomi?

I can't stand Dora. She screams, I cringe. The Punk hasn't ever watched an episode of the show because I think she's annoying. Not to say he doesn't get to watch TV - just not shows I find shrill or useless (like Wubbzy. Ick.). He has found a new "favorite" show that he requests when he earns a few minutes of TV time, and that is Team Umizoomi. At first I wasn't too impressed. The way-too-bright colors and sing-songy mannerisms didn't appeal to me. But then, I'm not 3.

When the Punk started lining up his Hotwheels in color patterns, and said "Just wike Miwwy and Geo!" I started paying more attention. He really IS picking up bits of Math here and there. So now when he earns an extra TV show for the day, I am now prepared with Team Umizoomi on the DVR.

Pattern Power!

Chopsticks are for Eating

Today I planned on showing the Punk how to transfer/count using his new chopsticks. Things didn't go so well. First, he (in usual Punk fashion) explained to me that chopsticks are for eating not for school. I showed him how he can pick up the glass stones with the chopsticks, and put them in the boxes on the paper. He relented, and tried his best. But, he started to meltdown a bit.

So I gave him the tongs instead. Things were better, but still not great. The Punk was very stressed about this activity, and was using lots of negative language (I can't, it's hard, etc.) so I suggested we stop and try something else - to which he went ballistic and said he was going to "finish dis fing!"

So I took the tongs and chopsticks and had him use his fingers instead. And then I found out what the problem had been all along. Some of the glass stones were turning over (flat side up) when he was using the tools to place them on the page. Once they were all "correct" and flat sides down he was fine and dandy again.

Why isn't he this particular about cleaning his room?

If you give a Punk a fish...

I love reading other Mommy/Teaching/Preschool/Home School blogs. And one of my favorites is Counting Coconuts. She uses the Montessori Method a lot, and makes some really interesting school tools. I have copied a couple of her ideas already. The most recent one I decided to make was a felt fishing "game".
I cut the fish from felt (freehand - they are all a little different). I sewed them shut with a bit of stuffing and a hardware nut (borrowed from the husband's garage) in the mouth of each.
A dowel, yarn, magnet and some hot glue later - we have a fishing pole! Each of the fish are numbered (1-10) on one side, and have dots to count on the other. So far we have played a game (numbers side up) where I ask him to fish for number ___ and he finds it, and another (dots side up) where he catches a random fish and we count the dots before revealing the numbers on the other side. I plan on using some flash cards or playing cards to add more interest to the game as we go on.
